Based on surveys Barnes collected, the top five worries of parents are, in order:

Kidnapping
School snipers
Terrorists
Dangerous strangers
Drugs

But how do children really get hurt or killed?

Car accidents
Homicide (usually committed by a person who knows the child, not a stranger)
Abuse
Suicide
Drowning

Interesting how parents are all fired up about the shit they can't do much about, but the real cause of child death/injury are things that are a lot more closer to home. It's pretty ridic.

It's probably precisely because they don't have control that they worry. The ones you mention are at least marginally within a parent's grasp: drive safely, only leave the kid with people you trust, don't abuse your kid (wtf), watch their mood, and don't fill the bathtub too high or leave the kid unattended. No matter what you do, you can't control the kid's environment to make him or her safe from the dangers you mentioned (except perhaps for drug education), so that's where you'll feel the most powerless and thus worry the most. Most people worry most about stuff they can't do anything about. The serenity prayer says it well:

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
