Matt:

I come from a Poker background where it almost never makes sense to split evenly, since someone always has an advantage in terms of chip position, and you can always tell if you have an edge or not. So, in order NOT to offend your fellow players offering deals to some and denying deals to others, the best way to go is to adopt a no deals policy.

Now, Magic is different and I now understand that the top-heavy nature of the events is a strong incentive not to play the games out, since you're never that big of a favorite anyways. That is the reason why I now always offer to split the prize but play for points.

I think that's fair, it lets you keep the prizes you were going to win, and it gives me the play/practice that I want.

Right?

The only time there's a good reason to split between people who are not friends is if the prize for top 2 is close. Let say the payout is 8 packs for 1st and 6 packs for 2nd, there's no reason to spend an hour playing for that extra pack.

Otherwise I have no problem with people wanting to play it out.

That is reasonable if the packs were all that is important in the equation (which it is too 90% of the FNM crowd). The time is the bigger issue to those of us who are wanting to go do a draft or something afterwards. Getting done with FNM at 12-12:30 is infi better than getting done with FNM at 2+ in the morning.

Right?
Wrong.

We don't split because we don't have an advantage, it's because we want to get the fuck home or go draft and not play for another 3 hours for minimal packs.

Time is money.

The split at a typical CBC fnm for top 8 is around 8-10 packs, playing 3 hours to lose in finals for 5 more packs is the lose.
