Hearthstone is not expensive. I've spent maybe $200 and can dust to build any deck.

Mixon nailed it so hard I think he slipped it a roofie. They are in the business of selling product, not running tournaments. These string of decisions they've made regarding the tournament circuit leads me to believe the sale of product is not very much affected by whatever happens in tournaments.
That's a fair assessment if they believe that the game will continue to sell through and attract new players at the same or better rate without the Pro Tour.

The PT has always been an advertising/marketing tool for the game, and this is the beginnings of them moving away from that mindset.

To many, I think it accurately shows that WotC believes that they don't need to entice people to try to play the game 'for a living' or to be 'professional players'. They've made it no longer an even remotely viable choice to hit Platinum and travel the world playing the game, and they think that this will not impact the magic buying public.

That might be right in the short term because casual players will still continue to play the game, but to claim the game is an E-Sport and to regard it in the same realm as the big boys of E-Sports and not to embrace the Pro Player is foolish and will eventually lead to the game failing to attract new players. Eventually the casual players will move on, and nothing will be left.

Riot has a pretty tight control on their pro esports scene. They have 4 Riot sponsored leagues in NA, EU, China, and Korea the 4 biggest regions. They also have sister sponsors in South America and the Southeast Asian non Korean countries. Pretty much 90% of competitive league is run by Riot. There are a few IEM tournaments throughout the year that aren't Riot sponsored.

DOTA doesn't have this problem because you have access to everything but skins from first download.

No clue on hearthstone but I imagine everyone playing has access to all the cards they need if they grinded hard enough to qualify for something like BlizzCon.
They just need to make the PT a MODO tournament. It fixes the issues of travel fees, convention center fees, judge fees, streaming/production fees and it forces them to fix them MTGO.

The casual players haven't moved on. All indications of Magic's popularity is from sales to casual players which is as strong as ever.

People predicting Magic dying really needs to stop. Many have predicted it and it hasn't happened yet. It's only making more money.

Casual players haven't moved on, but how much of that is because they hope to get good enough to one day play in PTQ's, GP's, PT's etc.? Maybe not much, but some.

And to be fair I should say that Magic in and of itself may not die, but my interest in the game, the whole reason I enjoy the game - competitive tournament play, will die off if this sort of corporate mindset continues.

More than anything though, I just find it distasteful for a company to pull the rug out on people like this. It's just not good business to treat people like that, even if they aren't the lions share of your profits.

100% agree

I think MTGO should become the "Competitive Outlet" for Magic while paper remains the "kitchen table/introductory product"

Everyone gets a churro.
If they just bought like 400 or so laptops at $500 (pretty decent laptop definitely MTGO capable) at $200k then they have guaranteed MTGO for every single PT. They can also *gasp* make an MTGO account specific to your DCI that gives you access to all legal cards for that tourney.

I think the problem here is you take a significant element of skill out of the game (remembering triggers/board states/etc that MTGO does for you) and you also add a new element of strategy (burning your opponents clock). You also take away the effectiveness of certain decks (like combo decks that take a milly clicks to win). Probably a win overall tho.

With Hearthstone being such an obvious competitor I don't know how they haven't made this decision yet. You can make GPs be a BYOC event where you have to have a computer to enter. Maybe convention center internet is too expensive? Maybe vendors will be pissed and they make a lot of money of vendors buying space for GPs?

As it stands right now though MTGO needs a massive overhaul for them to consider it the "Competitive Outlet".

They could tweak MODO to not auto-trigger abilities?
No more life total issues, etc
Maybe they could make a macro for the infi combos?
