Yeah, that's the most impressive reddit post I've ever read. Unbelievable detail and just sheer competence.

New Conspiracy Theory:

Trump knew he was going to be indicted eventually, so ran for president in order to be immune to arrest and prosecution for at least another 8 years.

Somebody here asked me a long time ago about what would have to happen to make arctic oil profitable

Voila!

That article doesn't specifically talk about Arctic oil though... just generally what would cause oil prices to spike.

Is there a specific agreed upon oil price in the industry at which point arctic oil would become profitable / worth extracting?

I imagine only higher level oil people with a say in investments would have that information. It would quite certainly be proprietary.

The article's reasons are really generic - falloff of OPEC production (or general production), war, increasing demand from China/India. All these are extremely well known and haven't changed for the past decade.

I mean, who would have guessed that natural disasters can devastate production infrastructure?

I will say that arctic reserves are almost certainly the last domino in the chain.

OPEC dropped prices to record lows in response to fracking. I sincerely doubt they wouldn't do the same to discourage arctic investment, not even speaking to the fact that fracking production (within existing infrastructure) isn't even fully realized.

To spike... to 100$ a barrel

Currently arctic costs are 85$ a barrel
