He should stop accepting nonsense-related resignations and just ride them out.

No, the problem is that there is a large number of (otherwise) rational people who DO have the ability to access objective information, but DO NOT attempt to do so. The problem is that large group who make decisions based on their feelings and past ideas and instruction, never bothering to check or challenge their assumptions.

The problem is that fear (whether of the unknown or the believed-to-be-known) is easy to play into patriotism and nationalism.

It is incredibly hard to unlearn what you (think you) know.

The DeVos camp can probably wiggle their way out of this, but I also got the impressions about Jim Crow that the article implies

This video is pretty amazing. This guy has an amazing handle on what's up. Video is a political analysts take on the US election and where the democrats are at, and where they should be.

Also, and on an unrelated note, what possible reason could there be for a military spending hike? Is he just paying back the military for their campaign and cabinet support? Didn't he just brag about cutting a lot of military spending on fighter jets?

Mexico had better get ready to be invaded. Not even kidding.

More realistically, Iran and/or N. Korea. He needs an army to launch the war that will allow him to win re-election.

So, the George Bush Jr model? Minus the vice president profiting directly from Halliburton weapons sales?

I think China also said "If trade stops, war starts" which makes sense: to employ their prodigious population, they need exports out the ass.

We need a law requiring companies to "pay" automated workers a portion of the salary the job they are replacing would earn and that money should go directly to education and social services. Eventually I would like that to be the source of $$ for Universal Basic Income.

UBI can then be the primary socialist support (along with free healthcare obv) and capitalism can still exist on top of it - in this vision, UBI would be set at an amount that you can get by on ($800-$1000 per month) but certainly not super comfortable, encouraging part-time employment. Then everyone can get 20 hours/week part-time jobs that are way manageable even if they suck, or full-time employment in a passion area that doesn't pay very well

Pretty much. I think the neocons in charge under Bush sincerely believed their policies were pro-security, but they were also motivated by politics and money, just like Trump & Bannon. The difference, I think, is that I think Trump & Bannon are likely to be actively imperialistic (i.e., Bush & Cheney didn't want to run Iraq, they just wanted its oil and to keep it from attacking Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, & Israel).

Is there any reason to believe Trump's egomania would be limited to thinking he's best suited to run America? For that same reason, I also don't think they are limited in any fashion by established norms with respect to human or civil rights. His proposed military budget is easily the scariest news to come out of the Trump White House so far.
